Do you have a water connection (hose bib) in an area that is difficult to get to? Does your hose bib drip or leak on the ground making it a headache to get to it? This tiny project is for eliminating those wet areas near water connections at your exterior wall. For more flagstone information see How to Design & Install a Flagstone Garden Walk .
See Author’s sketch of flagstone stepping stone at hose bib area.
Things you’ll need:
flagstones
weed artifact & shears
landscape rocks & gravel
hoe and rake
REMOVE ANY PLANTINGS IMMEDIATELY ADJACENT TO HOSE BIB AREA. Use rake and hoe to clear any remaining grassy debris. Decide the stone pattern you want to place and hoe the connector to soften it. Walk on the area for a few minutes to tamp earth.
PLACE WEED FABRIC ON EARTH PER MANUFACTURER’S RECOMMENDATIONS. Ask your local Home Store for additional advice in placing the fabric. Walk again on fabric, but tread lightly so as not to penetrate it. Place the flagstone steps in your designed pattern to create your flagstone steps. Leave about 1-2 inches between stones. Lightly step on stones to grant them to “sink” slightly until a firm travel surface is obtained. NO leveling necessary. If necessary, trim any excess weed artifact if it shows.
PLACE ROCKS AND GRAVEL ON ADJACENT AREA AND FILL JOINTS. Pour rock gravel mix from bags and spread with rake and hoe until satisfied with appearance. The author’s area has a cut off valve for the home water supply and a clean-out drain (not shown in sketch). Use contrasting or matching colors to flagstone as desired for aesthetic effect.
Tips and Warnings:
Don’t worry about leveling ground or stones, you want a natural look.
Make sure weed artifact is put on entire ground area to receive flagstone and rocks and gravel.
If you have a lot of existing bushes and shrubs in the area take caution when clearing. Snakes and other critters might be nesting there! Give them time to get away! See Author’s article on How To Avoid Snakebite.

A short time ago my wife and I decided to plant our garden. We went and bought a wheel barrow, some spades and hoes and other assorted garden equipment along with bagfuls of soil and flowerpots of all shapes and sizes…and then realised we had nowhere to store all this material.
We finally came to the conclusion that we needed to do a tiny more shopping and invest in a good set of outdoor garden shed plans.
I never realised how much you actually needed to think about when constructing such a structure. The one thing I didn’t think much about was the burden on the roof when it snowed. Please do this as snow is some really heavy stuff and most shed plans come with a evenhandedly flat roof pitch and use small spec lumber which will collapse under the load.
Also, sheds make for cracking targets for people looking to steal things to sell to pawn shops and flea markets and lawn and garden equipment sell great at these types of venues, so get yourself a good heavy door and strong lock.
I would also advocate that you acquire a set of plans for a shed that is a tiny larger than you believe you’ll need because trust me, it fills up fast.
Next, if it gets hot where you are located you need to make certain the plans include roof venting since it can become mighty hot in there and possibly alteration some of the shed’s contents.
Also please, do not attempt and economize by using cheap timber that will rapidly rot. Use pressure treated timber and then seal and paint it so it lasts many years.
An outdoor garden shed is nice to have and worth the investment. Just make certain if you are going to be building it yourself you get a good set of plans since it will save you a lot of time and money for sure.
