By necessity most indoor garden plants do not have access to the light of the sun as often as they need. Compact fluorescent plant light bulbs give indoor garden plants the light they need not only to survive, but thrive.

The benefits of using fluorescent plant tubes and compact fluorescent light bulbs in your home garden are many. Due to the very low energy consumption of these types of light bulbs, heat produced is minimal. Compact fluorescent light bulbs also offer color temperatures from low 2000K to over 9000K; this fact coupled with wide color spectrum output along could make the case for using CFLs for your indoor garden plants.

Although compact fluorescent light bulbs are the best for indoor garden plants, they are not without minor flaws. If the light bulbs are not appropriately placed, they can be very inefficient and lead you to install more bulbs than would normally be necessary.

There is a cheap and effective way to aid in the positioning of your indoor garden plant light bulbs; buy some reflectors and attach them to your compact fluorescent grow light bulbs. Compact fluorescents emit 360 degrees of light, but most of it is wasted. The most efficacious part of the bulb is just 90 degrees of that 360 degree spread. Reflectors can help direct the light to a single chosen location. Get an assortment of compact fluorescent light bulbs in varying wattages and size, so you can provide the most optimal light possible throughout all stages of your indoor garden plants’ lives.

Remember what I said about compact fluorescent light bulbs causing very little heat? This is a huge boon to indoor garden plants; you can place the bulbs close to the plants to allow for maximum light penetration without having to worry about burning them like you would with a fiery hot incandescent. This isn’t everything about indoor gardening, but it’s a good primer. Go forth armed with this knowledge, and create beautiful indoor gardens!

Many of us think of a beautiful garden as an almost unattainable goal, and certainly, a rose garden seems even more intimidating. Rose gardening has earned a reputation as being very difficult, a task only the most ambitious gardener with plenty of time on her hands would undertake. In reality, however, rose gardening just takes a little planning, a bit of maintenance and some patience.

As with any garden, a rose garden should be cleaned regularly. Keeping fallen leaves and other garden debris away from the roots of the plants will enable you to water the plants directly at the roots as well as keep fungus and other problems at bay.

Mulch is a wonderful ally to rose gardens. It weeds away and helps to keep the moisture level of your plants consistent. For this benefit, add mulch to your regular care shortly before the first bloom appears. In winter, careful mulching will protect your roses from a dangerous cycle of freezing and thawing, causing the plant to shift underground, damaging the root system. By reinforcing the plant with several inches of soil and covering that soil with mulch, you will protect the plant’s root system from the harsh conditions of winter and you will see a healthy plant emerge in the spring.

One of the most important tasks in any garden is watering. It is always important to maintain adequate moisture content for your plants, not too wet and certainly not too dry. Both extremes are detrimental to the health of your whole garden. When watering your rose plants, it is essential to water only around the base of the plant. Introducing water to the leaves and stems of the plants invites both rust and fungal diseases to your plants. The roses will enjoy a good root soaking when the weather conditions require it, saturating the soil to a depth of six to eight inches, rather than simply spraying the plants.

Careful feeding of your rose bushes will keep them looking their best throughout their flowering season and will keep the plants healthy during the dormant period. Your local garden center will have many choices for fertilizer for your roses, and you should carefully follow the instructions for the product you have chosen in measuring the fertilizer according to your type of rose. In general, you should feed your roses in early spring, as soon as you can see buds beginning to swell. Feed again after the plants have produced a full bloom. Another feeding should follow in late summer for most climates. If you have a long growing season, a fourth feeding in early October will hold your plants through the winter.

Following just a few simple guidelines will enable you to grow a beautiful rose garden that will add so much to your home landscape. Your effort will pay off with blooming, healthy plants that will be sure to impress your friends and neighbors.

If you are an amateur hobbyist or just starting off on gardening, consider buying a garden tool set. They tend to be cheap but of lower quality. The advantage is that you will have almost the full range of garden tools needed to start a garden. Once you have gained more experience working on your garden, you can better assess your tool requirement and preference. There may be problems, which you can foresee the tools required until you actually work on the affected areas. Also, every gardener will have a collection of tools in which some tools are constantly used, while other tools neglected and forgotten. You can spend more money on better quality tools once you have a grip on your garden and your gardening requirement.

Maintenance of Garden Tools

When you are buying new gardening tools, you are likely to be faced with a choice between low price and low quality or higher priced and better quality tools. Good quality garden tools are designed to last, but they must be also be properly maintained. If you opt for cheap garden tools, maintaining them is less of an issue. When they break or wear out, you simply throw them away and buy a replacement.

A basic maintenance regiment for garden tools involves cleaning and oiling. Always remove all traces of soil and plants remain from your garden tools after usage. If necessary, dismantle your tool to get at the dirt. Hose down with water to remove mud and scrape off any stubborn dirt with a brush or a screwdriver. Cleanse and rinse thoroughly any tools, which have been used for application of chemicals such as fertilizer. Fertilizer is corrosive to metal. After cleaning, do not store away tools when they are wet. Allow them to air dry completely to prevent rust and wood rot. At least once a year, rub linseed oil into the wooden part of your tools to make them last longer. Before storing, wipe the metal parts of your tools with an oily rag after each use. Or use a spray to apply the oil and wipe with a clean cloth.

If you use your tools often, you can make a convenient shovel cleaner cum oiler by filling a small bucket with sand and a quantity of new engine oil. Push your metal tool into the oily sand several times to clean and oil at the same time. This neat DIY clean/oiler can also be used as a shovel stand.

You may be tempted to buy stainless steel tools, as they are more rust resistant. However, you should know that they are less robust than traditional steel garden tools. For certain functions such as garden fork and rakes, they are not a good buy unless the price is cheap. Be warn though, you may end up buying a replacement more often than you think.

Some people don’t have yards or even patios because they live in apartments or other areas where they have no access. But they still would like to garden. Is it possible to garden without having access to some land outside?

There is an option to garden indoors. While there is a limitation on what you can grow inside, it’s very much possible. Many people grow a wide variety of things indoors.

The most common method is to use containers. You can control the soil that is full of nutrients and give it plenty of water. This isn’t a problem for the indoor gardener. The issue is lighting. Some people have the advantage of having sunlight they can leave the plants in. If you do not have this, you will have to grow plants that don’t need very much light or provide the light yourself. There are plenty of lamps that will provide the spectrum of lighting that your plants needs. These are not normal light bulbs but specially made for artificial indoor sunlight.

Some have indoor gardens for very simplistic plants. A common small garden to have in the kitchen is an herb garden. These are simple to maintain and make sense to grow in the kitchen since you can pick fresh herbs and cook with them immediately for great taste. It’s convenient to have access to these for recipes.

Another type of at home garden is sprouting. Sprouts can grow in jars and in trays without the need for soil. Many sprouts need no sunlight or very little light to grow properly. Most of the time from start to finish sprouts grow within a week making them easy to take care of.
It is possible to have indoor gardens. There is enough variety here that you can start and do something with your indoor space.

Snowdrops stand guard over tiny daffodil buds. Daylight is lingering a bit longer. The snow is receding and the robins are returning. The big thaw has begun. There’s no denying the signs. Spring is right around the corner.

If you’re like me, you can’t wait to get your hands into the soil. While you’re holding out for higher temperatures, there’s plenty you can do today to jumpstart the spring gardening season.

Sow Seeds Indoors

Take a trip to your local nursery or home store and buy seeds to start indoors. In March I like to start annual flowers for my pots and containers. Currently, I have Coleus, Zinnias, Impatiens, Petunias and Marigolds germinating. Follow the seed packet instructions and you’ll get excellent results. Some plants will take longer than others to bloom or bear fruit, so plan accordingly. This is also a great time for starting culinary herbs and vegetables. If you’re looking for something new this year, try moonflower vine or cathedral bells to climb your fence or trellis. Both can be started from seed. If you have children, get them involved. Many children have a natural affinity for gardening. It’s a great quality to encourage and nurture in them.

Dust Off The Birdhouses

I put my birdhouses out in early March. Small birds like chickadees will be actively searching for appropriate homes to raise their families. Mine were up for less than 24 hours before the home tours began.

Give Your Garden Tools A Checkup

Take your pruning shears and other cutting tools to your local hardware store for cleaning, oiling and a good sharpening. On a warm day you may want to assess your lawnmower. Take it in for servicing or a tune up now-while you can. Many lawnmower repair centers are swamped shortly after the season starts. It’s one tool you don’t want to be without.

Get Inspired

Order your garden catalogs. Purchase your favorite garden magazines. Here in the northeast, there’s nothing like winter time to remind me how valuable my summer garden space is. Create a wish list of new plants, design features and outdoor furniture. With a little planning, you won’t be overwhelmed when May rolls around.

Seek Out Indoor Gardening Events

In March there are countless indoor garden, flower and landscaping expos. If you can’t find anything in your local area, a day or weekend trip to a flower show might be just what you need. Look for a botanical garden or arboretum with indoor facilities. In my area we have Longwood Gardens. It has year round indoor gardens and the displays are fantastic.

Clean Out Your Beds

As soon as the snow has melted and the weather permits, you can clean out your beds. It’s a good time to rake and clear your planting areas of dead branches, leaves and debris. I like to mulch as soon as possible in the spring, while there’s still plenty of space between the emerging bedding plants.

Learn A Landscape Design Software Program

There are so many inexpensive landscaping software programs available today, many of them under $50. 00US. During the winter months you’ll have plenty of time to learn how to operate the system.

Create and sample new designs before digging. Take advantage of the overhead and 360 degree views. Many of the programs now offer a 3D walk through feature. It simulates the experience of walking through an actual garden. You can also advance the garden timeline into the future to see what it will look like when the plants and trees mature. It’s a wonderful creative tool to beat the winter blues!

Call Your Landscaper Now

If you’re planning to use a professional landscaper this year, make sure to schedule your work as far in advance as possible. When the ground is soft enough for digging, landscapers will be working overtime to keep up with the volume.

Book Your Garden Tours Now

Scour the internet for local and regional garden tours. Find out when tickets go on sale and plan ahead. I’ve often read announcement lists in the newspaper after I’ve already made other plans. There’s nothing like visiting other people’s gardens for encouragement and inspiration.

I hope these suggestions get you motivated to take action. The sooner you get started on your garden plans-the more time you’ll have to enjoy the rest of the season. Happy Gardening!

Over the past few years, following the appearance of one in one of Jamie Oliver’s television series we have seen a boost in the popularity of outdoor ovens . A lot of people have fond memories of family insisting on having the barbeque out at the first glimpse of a warm evening and our passion to cook outdoors comes from this. Outdoor ovens bring a little more sophistication to outdoor cooking than the trusty barbeque and in this article we will run through the basics of outdoor ovens and the correct way to clean your outdoor oven.

Types of outdoor oven

You will find that there are two types of Outdoor Oven, one of which works by burning fuel, either wood or gas, and the other is a solar outdoor oven. The kind of outdoor oven that burns wood or gas, or a combination of both, is normally manufactured from brick or clay. These may be built yourself (if you have the skill) but it is generally a good idea to purchase one. You’ll also find outdoor ovens produced from ceramic, these however do not have the traditional feel of a brick or clay version.

The solar variety that you will find may be the environmentally friendly option, utilising the suns rays to supply the heat to cook with. Not surprisingly this type of outdoor oven doesn’t have the capability to achieve the temperature possible using the wood or gas burning variety, nevertheless they are still sufficient to cook in.

Cleaning your outdoor oven

To keep your outdoor oven in good working order it is essential that you ensure that it stays clean. In order to clean them thoroughly you ought to turn them up to around 900 degrees Fahrenheit and (whilst wearing heat resistant gloves) use a spatula to remove all of the food debris from your outdoor oven. When you have turned your oven off the debris can just be brushed from the inside of the oven.

What you can cook with an outdoor oven

Traditionally outdoor ovens were used to cook pizzas (hence simple fact they are sometimes known as outdoor pizza ovens) but you can use them for other dishes as well:

·Should you place it inside a pot a stew or casserole can be cooked in an outdoor oven

·If you are using a broiler you’ll be able to cook meat in the oven

·Wrap vegetables in tin foil and cook them in your outdoor oven

·You could even try to cook a curry in your outdoor oven

Outdoor ovens are incredibly versatile and may be used to cook numerous dishes and are ideal for parties or family gatherings.

You only in need two things- determination and know-how, to make a simple yet well-maintained garden in a yard. These are some tips on how to keep your garden by the yard looking glamorous and spruced up.

1. Deadheading

Always remember to keep your garden free from dried leaves and wilted flowers. Removing dead flower heads or deadheading will encourage the plants to bloom for a longer period of time. Some annual plants and many perennials like Dahlias and Geraniums, benefit from having spent blooms removed.

2. Pinch out tops

Foliage plants like Coleus and many different types of plants respond with a burst in growth when their tops are pinched. You can make the plants much more bushier and make them bloom by pinching out the top. Plants like Fuchsias become leggy unless you pinch them put.

3. Fertilize lightly

If you want a boost in your vegetation then you can add minimum amount of fertilizer. You need to fertilize your garden frequently because the nutrients may wash away if you fertilize your garden frequently. Liquid fertilizer that has been applied fortnightly has been found to be more beneficial than granules as the leaves readily absorb it. If you regularly apply a half strength solution of liquid fertilizer to container plants then they will become considerably healthier.

4. Weed out

Weeding is one of the best ways to preserve the beauty of your garden. Always remember that weeds compete with your garden for nutrients and moisture. You can also leave the weeds down to mulch if they are not close to seeding. Rather than using a spray you can use a wick applicator for applying your weedicide, this will also protect your plants from the spray drift.

5. Water them well

A good tip is to give your garden a thorough soaking once every week. However, to prevent erosion make sure there is no run off. The growth of deeper roots will be encouraged with deep watering. This will also help the plant to withstand dry spells.

6. Say no to chemicals

Try to avoid chemicals as much as you can. These are not only harmful for humans but also kill the predators of pest in your gardens. There are many organic alternatives, which work as well as the chemicals ones.

Your garden will soon become the envy of your neighbors if you follow these simple tips.
