Setting aside some time this spring for an outdoor project, should be as much fun as decorating for Christmas

When you are considering to increase the pleasing opportunities of your backyard, you should come up with a plan. Customize your outdoor social space with a secondary cozy area.

Adding another destination to your space is just like adding another room to your house, so you’ll have similar considerations to make. You will have to keep in mind the existing landscape, what part of the day will it be in the sun and shade? Would the area be blocked from the wind or would it need steps? Figure out the answers to these questions before you begin.

Choose a location – A “cozy,” additional space can be set as close to or as far from your main outdoor pleasing area as you want. The saint placement provides an “off-the-beaten-track” destination in your own backyard , helping to create two distinctly separate outdoor areas.

Adding distance between the two areas lets you create a private area that’s an intimate conversation spot and furnished with a more selective relaxed outdoor furniture . This “satellite” area/outdoor room will have a quieter, more laid-back feeling than the main space and should be the saint place to sit around a fire pit.

As this is more aside from the main entertainment area, this space should have another use, as a kids’ play section with a sandbox and some toys around. Having all this set up further away from the main area grants children to have fun and explore, while adults can converse and dine without interruptions, hopefully.
Pick your material wisely. if this is an extension of another deck select the same material for your “secondary area.” Think about the following factors when choosing for the outdoor material: longevity, care, price and aesthetics, they are all as important. If you are installing pavers, remember that most require using sand as a base material.

If you’re interested in the latest technological advances products in building materials, a good purchase is premium composite or resin decking .

Using pavers: all you have to do is lay them side by side to create neat borders that separate your lawn and garden, or if you like you can stack them in a low surround to make a raised bed .

Fort Worth occasionally enjoys some snowfall even though it might be light… but sometimes enough to build a Snowkitty for your garden or lawn. Yes a Snowkitty, not a Snowman! Here’s some info to help you in your task in creating something that your own kitty should enjoy.

	Instructions

1

With enough snow and a few common accessories you too can be the first family on the block to build your own Snowkitty. The picture above shows a Snowkitty sleeping out of plain white snow. See this Snowkitty for the type described in the steps below.

Build Your Snowkitty similar to building a Snowman:

2

Things You’ll Need:

  Snow

  Waterproof Winter gloves

  Whisker twigs

  Plastic funnel

  Dirt (or fireplace ashes)

  Charcoal Briquettes

3

Choose a good shady spot for your Snowkitty, perhaps on your lawn or garden under a tree where there is adequate snow nearby. If possible, find a shady spot to minimize snow melt. Hint: Use snow from tops of automobiles roofs and hoods, fence rails or any horizontal surface that collects a snow build up from a snowfall. The shadier the spot the superior to make Snowkitty last longer than most Snowmen do!

4

Collect and build snow mounds for Snowkitty shape. Begin with body, head and front legs and paws, finish with cut and ears. For an intent see the picture from a card my one of my daughters, Joelle, sent me this year (see link in Step One). Pic by Black Star Photography and card is a Gallison New York source.

5

Make fur stripe lines, eyes and nose with dirt or ashes and charcoal briquettes Use plastic funnel by holding in one hand and guiding funnel while pouring dirt or ashes from other hand. Use charcoal briquets or dirt clods for eyes and nose.

6

Make whiskers from long, thin, stripped twigs from tree in yard. Be sure whiskers are long and thin enough so your kitty can play with them!

7

These steps shoud get you started. Of course you can be more creative and select other materials for the black markings and twigs according to your desire. This should be a family affair so that you can capture on film or digitally all the fun you and your kitty will have.

Try building your own Snowkitty and send us a note and some photos and we will do a follow-up article and make a slide show of all your fun Snowkitty experiences.

Good Luck!

Tips & Warnings

Keep a pail of slightly warm water handy if necessary to help pack snow.

Build Snowkitty on overcast day to prevent fast melting.

Do select a shady spot if possible, yes you do have shade in Winter!

Work as fast as you can.

Keep kitty (…real kitty!)…away until you and your family are ready for her to play!

How to Build a Summer Compost Bin

A compost bin is an essential part of any great gardening project

If you have a small yard, I am sure you build up some green waste over the summer months.

Rather than having your gardener dispose of this wonderful compost, why not build a easy compost bin so that you have a wonderful soil amendment for your garden come next spring?

Want to get in real good with that gardener and perhaps get a discount on your lawn mowing and yard maintanence charges???

Ask him to bring his gardening trims over to your compost bin until it is full??? Get great compost for free!

Want a larger bin? You can have him leave his green waste for a couple of months and probally save even more!

Things You’ll Need:

3 wooden pallets
4 metal corner braces
wood screws
cordless screwdriver

Check around with your local garden centers, construction companies and other businesses to see if any have used pallets that you can get for free or a reduced rate and save even more!

Add more bins to your set up as apiece additional bin only uses 2 more pallets. That’s right, just line them up side by side and attach apiece to the other to for an E shape and you now have 2 compost bins.

Continue adding more to make an HHHH as you go along and soon you can be selling completed compost to your neighbors! As long as you have the room that is.

Figure out where you wish to place your first compost bin.

Lay all 3 pallets on the ground where you intend on placing your bin.

Assemble all items you need to build your bin and grab an assistant or two, to help you.

Lay your first pallet on it’s grappling with the side with the most boards on the bottom.

Using your cordless drill/screwdriver you can attach a Corner brace to the top and bottom of the right and left sides of the pallet.

Now you can stand this pallet up on one end leaving your corner braces on apiece side. Have an assistant hold this pallet up.

Take the second pallet and line it up against the side of your first one. Be sure that the corners are flush with one another to make a nice L shape. You might need a second assistant to hold up this second pallet or the first assistant could possibly hold both at the corner.

Now using your cordless drill/screwdriver you will attach the 2 pallets together at the corner braces.

Do the same for the other side and your first compost bin is complete.

If you wish to add a second one to the first you can do it at this time to form the letter E or H depending on the configuration you wish to use. You can continue to add as many bins as you wish using this method.

You are now ready to begin adding green waste to your compost bin. Remember to turn your pile each couple of weeks and water it down well to keep the internal temperature up high enough for your compost to “cook”. This will kill weed seeds and keep the beneficial microbes happy to properly process your green waste into useable completed compost your garden will love!

Tips & Warnings

You can add garden or composting worms if you like but this is not necessary. Even if you have “dead dirt” instead of soil the worms will find their way to your compost bins.
Shred all your junk mail and newspapers and add them to your pile
You can lay down sheets of cardboard at the bottom of your pile to aid in inviting the beneficial microbes to your bin that you will need. Nothing attracts worms and beneficial microbes like cardboard does!
Do not add grease or meat to your bin, it only attracts ants and other insects that you do not want to colonize your bins.
Use a good garden fork or shovel and turn your pile to mix things up a bit at least once a month
Bins steam during warmer weather if you keep them wet enough, if not they smoke…Smoke is NOT a good thing, Steam is
Make sure to soak down the bins from time to time. Composting material can get VERY HOT which can begin a fire if you do not keep the bins wet enough! I had this happen one year so I know this is true and not an urban legend

With unlimited amount of funds available, any landscape can be turned into an astonishing garden. But with limited budget, this goal is not out of reach. One of the obvious ways of reducing costs is to divide the plants and trade them with other landscape gardeners who are interested in doing the same.

One type of plants that are a great quality to have is perennial plants. They are ever lasting and need no extra maintaining efforts. Usually, as years go by, such plants tend to become larger and larger. But this is not a gift if the lawn space is limited. Split the plants along the yard to make more space. This tendency of perennial plants to overgrow can be used to our advantage by splitting. Without additional cost a beautiful garden can be built up by splitting the plants after they have grown beyond capacity at one place.

It is a very simple thing to fill up a fence by using the right type of shrubs which need splitting and reseeding. A few shrubs put here and there can make way for a fantastic lawn over the course of years.

Trading with others who are in the same position can be a good choice. If you have a lot of plants of the same variety and think that you do not need more of it. Then you can share it with others and get another variety of plants to further add to the beauty of your lawn. Ask the other landscape gardeners for some of the perennials. They are often happy to share as the perennial plants can be quite aggressive during their growth.

There are clubs for people who are interested in landscape gardening. This can be a good place where you exchange ideas and share plant varieties. Rare and exotic variety of plants can often be obtained by such means. With clubs come activities like the discussions on ideas, trips to other gardens etc.

There are books on gardening that give good suggestions. These can be purchased after careful consideration. Having other gardeners as friends can often mean that you get to know which books are good so that you can purchase them on your own.

Over the course of years, with due enduringness and work, it is doable to split your plants, share with others and build a beautiful garden.

First select a good location in your yard. Make the pond a focal point. Design your pond with a can of marking paint or an old garden hose. Begin digging around the perimeter. You can make the pond different levels by making shelves as you dig. If you want fish to live year round in colder temps the deepest area should be at least 30 inches.

Next add some sand in the bottom and on the shelves to level and protect the liner. You can get a liner from your local home improvement store or use some rubber roofing material. Spread your liner out starting in the deepest area. Fold the liner to the contour of the pond,up and over the top edges.

You’ll need to get some rocks. Just plain field stone you can find it around in your yard or creeks. You might also just buy some field stone from a local stone dealer. Begin laying the rock around the perimeter of the liner. Making sure to select the flattest rock first to get a good base.

You’ll need a Pump to circulate the water. Place the pump on one of the shelves and run the hose through the second layer of stone. Decide which area you would like a waterfall and place the pump there. Continue finishing the stone layers and stack a few more for the waterfall. Take the hose and slip it in you waterfall.

Finally fill your pond with water.Plug in your pump and check water flow.Let sit over night before adding fish.

Have you created a woodworking shed in the past? If It might be your first time you might want a small amount of coaching with the process. It’s sometimes not as simple as it seems to implement. It is imperative that you’re planning your projects prior to deciding to do.

What else in necessary.
The first thing to decide on is the reason why you desire to have a woodworking shed inside your back yard garden. Are you considering the fact that you really need a place to place your current home or garden tools or perhaps do you wish to store your golf equipment there? Do you need to have a place to hide, to rest from time to time? Would you be willing to let the children use it as a playhouse also?
You’ll find so many doable reasons why you would like to enjoy a woodworking shed and virtually no motive is more preferable to another one. They are typically somewhat simple to comprehend and as long as you plan your work prior to deciding to do anything you can anticipate to end up being delighted with this original smaller sized building in your backyard.

The next thing you should refer is where you would wish to position your woodworking shed. Is there an saint space inside the backyard that you can already envision? There are some things you should remember while you are attempting to figure out where it needs to be positioned. Right off the bat, you really should build it in a location in which it certainly can’t interrupt your neighbors. That’s important to take into statement no matter what outdoor project you are planning the construct. An often overlooked detail to think about is the fact that it should be positioned where it isn’t shading the garden from the sunshine.

The third aspect to figure out is actually how huge you wish your woodworking shed to become. This is determined by what you would like to utilize it for. How many tools will be permanently set up inside? Does it need to be massive enough for the children to use it as a playhouse? Alternatively, does it need to only protect your golfing equipment from the elements? If you are going to be building small projects, birdhouses and the like, it’s still ideal to plan a tiny extra space for storing materials- along with the clubs.

Answer these types of questions, one at a time and when you’ve done then it’s time to start designing your own woodworking shed. You will soon discover that it can be quite fun to plan and build something like this. If the planning stage is not your cup of tea, think about purchasing step by step plans and take the stress and strain out of figuring out dimensions and material lists and each other detail that tends to be overlooked!
Have a plan and use it and use it and remember this project as one that went smoothly, efficiently, and didn’t cost more than expected!

Purpose of a Rock Garden

The purpose of a rock garden is to show off either existing rock outcroppings or boulders with existing sculptural values, or to create rock effects. Whatever the purpose, a rock garden provides a home for diminutive plants. The treatment of the component rocks and flowers in such a garden requires a high degree of artistry. A common mistake is to try to form a rock garden from a pile of rocks in a small, level front yard.

Instructions

1

Placement of Rocks

The rocks in a rock garden should look as though they belong to the site. They should be set solidly and firmly. If possible, stones native to the region should be used. Cut stone with flat surfaces should not be used. Sedimentary rocks which occur in nature with horizontal cleavage lines should be ordered horizontally. Stones that are longer than they are wide should be ordered horizontally. The largest stones should be put at the bottom, with the broadest grappling down and the weathered surfaces exposed. Each stone should be ordered so as to contribute to a look of stability. Rock arrangements are subject to the same general principles applying to other phases of landscapes. Each stone should be ordered so that water runs back into the rock openings.

2

Rock Garden Plants

The purpose of a created rockery might be to keep soil from washing down along steps or to serve as a dry surround for flowers. Since alpine and other plants used in rock gardens require a maximum of winter sun, they should be planted with that in mind. These plants should not be granted to burn in summer. There should be an ample supplying for the drainage.

The pockets and crevices that are created for plants should contain soil favorable to their growth, or else plants should be selected to fit the existing soil. A deep, moist soil is good for most rock garden plants. Peaty soil is ideal for members of the heat and orchid family. A soil composed largely of crushed rock or gravel is ideal for mossy and starry saxifrages and low-growing sedums. Leaf mold favors the primrose and lily families.

3

Planting Details

The rock garden should not be planted too thickly. Enough space should be acquirable for apiece plant to develop. Several plants of a kind grouped together are more effective than individual plants scattered here and there, apiece plant different.

Plants such as low-growing sedums should be put in the sunniest positions; the more delicate ones, such as alpine primulas, should find shelter in nooks. Such plants as cerastium and dwarf phlox might be used to overlapping ledges. Some plants, wild ginger for example, can get a foothold on the steepest slopes. On the tops of rocks and in most conspicuous locations, the Acanthus mollis, Spiraea aruncus, and columbine can be used to advantage.

Because spring-blooming bulbs bloom primeval and don’t interfere with rock plants, they might be spread in masses among the alpine plants. There are thousands of alpines and dwarf perennials for you to select from. Some dwarf annuals might be included, or dwarf species of bulbs, iris, and broad-leaved evergreens.

Among the numerous plants that can be used in rock gardens are the following few classified groups:

How to Make a Rain Garden

Select a Location for the Rain Garden
If you are wondering how to build a rain garden, then the first thing that you need to do is select a location for the rain garden. Select a location for the rain garden that receives plenty of sunlight so that the excess water gets evaporated quickly. Make sure that the location of the rain garden is at least 12-15 feet away from the perimeter of the house. This is because if it is too near the house, it will cause water to seep into the foundation which might compromise the integrity of your house’s foundation. An saint location for a rain garden is a spot that ends at a natural slope. This will make the water from the stormwater runoff naturally flow to the area.

Plan the Shape and Size for the Rain Garden
You can have a rain garden of any size, but make sure that the size is proportional to the area of the property and that it enhances the landscape. The depth of the rain garden for a ground which is evenhandedly level should be around 3-5 inches. For ground that has a slight slope to it, a depth of 6-8 inches is sufficient. A natural shape like an oval, kidney or a teardrop shape looks more captivating than a square or rectangular shaped rain garden. So select a shape that looks natural and gels well with the landscape.

Dig the Ground for the Rain Garden
Once the location of the rain garden has been established, it is time to dig the ground. Define the perimeter of the rain garden by laying a piece of string. Install wooden stakes around the perimeter of the rain garden that you are about to dig. Now begin digging the ground to the required depth using a shovel. If you are planning to build a rain garden of a larger depth, then it is advisable that you use professional services for digging the ground. If you are building the rain garden on a slope, then you will need to make a berm on the downhill side of the rain garden. To build a berm just compact the soil that you dug out on the inside of the downhill edge of the depression. The intent is to have the same elevation for both the uphill and downhill side of the rain garden so that water does not flow out of the depression, but percolates slowly into the ground.

Plant Grass and Shrubs on the Depression
After you have dug the depression on the ground and created a berm around it, it is time to plant your garden. Select a variety of tall grasses, ferns, flowering plants and shrubs and plant them in the garden. Select rain garden plants and shrubs that can thrive in a moist environment. Plants that have a well established root system are saint for a rain garden as they help in absorbing the excess water without any fear of rotting. Add a layer of mulch to the garden bed taking care that you do not bury the crowns of the plants with mulch. Water the plants regularly after mulching them.

This was all about how to build a rain garden. Once the garden is established and the plants grow and thrive, remove weeds from the garden periodically. You can beautify the garden by using small pebbles or river stones along the edge of the berm. Creating a rain garden is not a difficult task, even though it can be a tiny time consuming. However, the benefits of having a rain garden are many and you should definitely build one in your front or backyard.

Before beginning to build a raised garden, it is important to determine why a raised garden is needed or desired. Included in this assessment should be a consideration of the type of plants to be grown in the garden. Raised gardens are used to make a garden more convenient, to offer superior soil content, for ornamental purposes, and a few other good reasons.

A raised vegetable garden might not be ideal for a landscape feature.

If the garden is being raised as a landscape feature, it might not be the ideal intent to make it a vegetable or herb garden because most of these plants are not perennials. This will mean that the garden is vacant and a doable eyesore for half of the year. Raised landscape gardens are ideal filled with small evergreen shrubs that can be surrounded by other perennials or annuals when the time is right.

Convenience and soil improvement are two excellent reasons for a raised garden.

Elevating the soil bed a foot or two can make weeding and pest control much easier. Having a raised garden filled with high calibre soil for the plants will also mean less plant feeding and superior sustained growth and crop production. It also affords more capability to see what the plants are doing regarding growth and health.

Regardless of the purpose, you can make the raised garden captivating if it is visible to the neighborhood.

While nearly any material can be used to make the framework for a raised garden, some choices will make a more amusing look. All types of landscaping material choices should be captivating and durable if installed correctly. For raised gardens that are intended for function only, using old railroad ties or recycling treated lumber will work fine. Some people have even used old truck tires even though you might want to investigate the environmental impact as these degrade.

Pick a spot that will not need a lot of reshaping to make construction easier.

Unless you are in the middle of a major landscaping operation at your house, the ideal place for a raised garden should not need major excavation before construction begins. It is a good intent to remove any grass and plants that are already present in the site. However, if you intend to place a barrier under your raised garden, this might be unnecessary.

Determine the volume of your garden ahead of time.

Stake out the spot and calculate the number of cubic feet of soil that you will need to fill your garden. This will help you decide whether to purchase bags of soil or have it brought in by truck. It is usually much cheaper to have it delivered by truck if you need a lot. It is a good intent to purchase a tiny extra soil to compensate for any unlevelled areas. If you have determined the height of the walls of your raised garden, just multiply the length times the width times the height in feet to get cubic feet. While you are at it, find the perimeter of your plot so that you can purchase enough materials to build the walls.

For extra tall walls, purchase lumber to use as anchors.

Most raised gardens are only about 12 to 18 inches tall. At this height, little, if any, engineering is necessary. If the surround grows to 3 or 4 feet or taller, you will find it needs to be anchored with boards passing through the surround and reaching several feet back into the garden plot. These will act as secondary foundations for the upper part of the surround and keep the built up soil from actuation the surround over. Just fit one in each couple of feet and attach the surround to it if you are using wood for the wall. Some of the manmade materials interlock and do not need this extra support.

Install a footing if you want to keep moles and other similar pests out.

A shallow footing of 12 to 18 inches deep will stop most moles from entering your garden. Just dig a easy trench and fill it with concrete. You can reinforce it if you will be building a heavy wall. Otherwise, putting metal into it is not really required. This shallow footing can be helpful if you make it a tiny wider than needed so that grass growth is kept away from the wall. It will make mowing around your garden much simpler.

Build your surround to the desired height.

For wood or other materials that you intend to install straight up and down, just build up your surround until it is the correct height for your raised garden. Some types of stone might be ideal installed by laying a row and filling with dirt. Let the next row rest with the inside edge slightly on the dirt. Repeat this process until the surround is complete. The completed surround should have a slightly sloped appearance. Do not let the slope be too great or the settling dirt will grant your surround to collapse.

Lay a barrier over the bottom of the garden.

For most raised gardens, it is a good plan to lay a barrier like paper or plastic over the exposed connector before filling the garden. This will help the garden retain more of the moisture that come into it. Some gardeners like no barrier so that roots can penetrate deeper into the earth. However, if the soil of the plot is the problem, this approach can be counterproductive to the garden.

The garden should be ready for planting.

With the good soil and raised garden, it is time to get some great plants and start your gardening. If you have used regular topsoil for your garden, you might want to get some type of water soluble plant food to start feeding your new garden right away. Make sure that you use plants suited for the amount of sunlight acquirable to your garden.
