Pick an appropriate place in your yard for the type of plants you wish to grow. Consult with your garden center or nursery about sun exposure, soil needs etc. Once you have chosen the site, start preparing the beds.

The most manageable size is 4′ x 8′ – this grants access to all parts of the bed from all sides. If you would like more than one bed, make sure you place them at least 2′ apart for simple access. Different shaped beds add visual interest to your landscape, but make sure you can still access the whole bed without entering it.

Mark off the size of the beds with tape measures or a chalk line, then start tilling the soil within that space. You will be adding soil on top of this, but the roots will dig deeper than the soil you place in the bed. After the soil has been tilled, edge the bed with your choice of materials. If you are planting vegetables or fruits, make sure you use something that will not leach chemicals into the ground (I used cinder blocks). If you are planting flowers, landscape timbers are very captivating edging for beds.

After the edging is in place, add the topsoil and compost to the bed to a depth of 6 inches. Use a shovel to combine the material together. Fill the bed with plants of your choice according to your garden center’s instructions and enjoy your newly planted garden. Remember to water according to the plants needs; this information can be obtained from the garden center or nursery where you purchased your plants.

Last year, I did not water my gardens with a hose once and they did superior than ever. I spent much less time doing chores and much more time enjoying my gorgeous gardens! This is all because of a easy underground watering system that my husband and I installed in an afternoon when we place in our flowerbeds. Here’s how you can cut down on your gardening chores as well!

You will Need:

soaker hoses twice the length of your flower beds (These are the hoses with tiny holes althroughout them that grant water to pass through.)
automatic watering timer (These can be either digital or analog and range in price. I have one with two separate timers for two different hoses.)
a hose just the right length to reach from your outdoor water spigot and the beginning of your garden

1) We installed our watering system while we were making the flowerbeds but with some care I believe you could install these hoses into existing gardens. After we had prepared and amended the soil we dug a shallow trench everywhere we wanted our hose to sit. We have flowerbeds that run around our home and did a zig-zag pattern all around. Our garden is disturbed by a couple feet of steps that lead up to our door so I ran the home behind and underneath the steps. If you are installing the hoses into a pre-existing garden you will have to be careful about what plants you are disturbing but you might have an advantage as you can lay the hoses perfectly around the plants that are there.

2) Next, we ordered the soaker hoses down in the trenches. Because the hoses had been coiled prior to use, they were stubborn and did not want to stay where we ordered them. We had several rocks with us and used these to hold down the hose where we zigged and zagged it.

3) Hook up the hoses so that they are all attached and connected to the water spigot. If your gardens are not directly beside the faucet, use the length of regular hose between the faucet and the soaker hose so that you do not waste water where it is not needed. Connect the timer to the faucet and plug the hose into the timer.

4) At this point, you can cover the hose with soil and then with mulch if you use it. I place down about an inch of soil over the hoses and then mulch on top of that. Burying the hose cuts down on water usage because the water goes directly to the roots rather than evaporating before the plant is healthy to use it.

5) Finally, decide when and for how long you would like your garden to be watered and set your timer according to this. Take into statement that soaker hoses take longer to water. Also, it takes a tiny bit of time for the water to reach the end of the soaker hose so keep an eye on the portion of garden with the end of the hose and make sure it is getting sufficient water. This might take some adjustments at first.

That’s it! This shouldn’t take you more than an afternoon and is extremely cheap! The hoses do not even have to be removed in the winter as they can expand and contract without being dilapidated because they are porous. Enjoy your carefree garden!

Do you want the perfect lawn? A lawn that looks as green and weed-free as a putting green? That’s something each homeowner wants. Lots of people think they know how to get a lawn like that, but then they go out and do all the wrong things to their lawn, and wonder why they have a brown, weed-infested, unhealthy lawn instead.
Here are five mistaken beliefs that many people have about lawn care.

“I need to mow my grass short.” A healthy lawn has deep roots. How do you get deep roots? By mowing the grass only when it gets more than 2.5 inches high. Longer grass stems deliver more nutrients to the roots, which helps them to grow deeper. Longer stems also protect the soil from too much sun, which dries it out. When you cut the grass short with each mowing, you’re actually harmful it.
“Thatch is good for my lawn.” The layer of organic matter that builds up between the grass tops and the soil is called thatch. Some people are under the mistaken impression that thatch is good for their lawn. When thatch gets more than half an inch thick it can block sunlight and suck up moisture that is needed by the grass roots. That’s when you need to de-thatch your lawn, so it can breath again.
“My lawn needs a lot of fertilizer.” One of the biggest mistakes many homeowners make is to over-fertilize their lawn. Most lawns do not need to be fertilized much. To determine your lawn’s nutrient requirements, get a soil test. That will determine what fertilizer you need to use. Think about using organic fertilizers like compost, because they release nutrients slowly over time.
“The more water, the better.” Watering too much is another way to make sure your grass has shallow roots. It’s superior to water once a week or less, but water deeply, letting the water soak into the ground. This encourages the roots to grow deeper. Don’t panic during dry spells! It’s not the end of the world if a lawn turns brown — it just means the grass has gone dormant. In most cases, it will green up again when the rain comes back.
“I need to use the strongest weed killer I can find.” A superior method of weed control is to pull up weeds when you see them, before they have a chance to germinate and spread. Also, concentrate on developing a thick, healthy turf (seeding bare spots), because thick grass naturally chokes out weeds. There’s no reason to nuke your whole lawn with powerful chemicals unless your weeds have gotten out of control. Spot spray the trouble areas if you must, but refrain the Armageddon approach.

Avoid these mistakes and you’ll have a healthy lawn.

Has your late summer garden seen superior days? If your outdoor paradise is getting a tiny ragged, and you would like some simple and cheap gardening tips to get it back into shape in time for fall, keep reading!

Most gardens, no matter how well they are designed will have periods without a lot of bloom. But a late summer garden is more than just demand of bloom; it’s overgrown plants, ratty leaves, spindly annuals and brown spots in the lawn. Here’s how to fix these garden problems.

Cut back your blooming perennials by half. This will stimulate new growth, and create need for another flush of flowers in the begin for many varieties. It will also clean up the overgrown look of your flower beds.

If you still have brown foliage from spring bulbs showing, it is innocuous to cut them to the ground now. They have already stored all the energy they need for spring bloom, and the dead plant matter isn’t doing anything for the look of your garden.

If you have a pest problem, you should be addressing it. You can use commercially acquirable Sevin dust for many of the most common predators, or seek out an organic alternative. One good way to refer what is intake your plants is place a piece of white paper under the leaves of the plant being attached and give the plant a good tap or shake. Whatever pest is the culprit should begin onto the paper for simple identification. If you’re stumped, pop it in a blow and take it to your local nursery for finding and advice on how to eradicate it while doing the least alteration to beneficial bugs. Remember, we need those bees! Don’t’ poison them.

If you have annuals planted in containers or beds that have seen superior days, cut them back hard. Apply a good dose of water soluble fertilizer and they will bounce back and begin re-blooming for you. Petunias, alyssum and geraniums all need a good rejuvenation this time of year, but will bloom well into begin if you try this trick.

If your lawn has developed some dry spots, try raking in an organic compost or fine bark to protect the soil and hold in moisture. Water frequently during the day for a week or two until you begin to see new green growth. Cut back on the watering gradually, but be consistent until the lawn is once again green in the spot.

A late summer garden might seem to have gone to sleep, but its pretty simple to throw a huge basket of water on it and wake it back up. (Both literally, and figuratively!) Use these simple and cheap gardening tips to renew your garden, and have a beautiful spot to spend those quiet autumn afternoons.

Vanities are one of the major focal points in a bathroom. In general, they are one of the easier fixtures to remodel so if you are looking to remodel your bathroom, you might want to begin with the vanity.

There are many styles to choose from, and making the decision on which to purchase is often not an easy choice. But knowing the major types of vanities can help make the decision making much more easy. Contemporary vanities have a distinguishable contemporary appearance. There are many styles out in the market, as they can be prefabricated out of several different materials and are prefabricated in several different shapes. Materials can be anything from stainless steel, glass, wood, chrome, and man-made composite materials.

Contemporary vanities are sleek, streamlined, and have a noticeable geometric appearance. Many will feature a countertop or vessel sink, while some will have vanity top formed from the basin. Many contemporary vanities are wall-mounted, but just as many can have a classic or rustic design. So, they are in a class of their own. Wall mounting vanities do well in smaller bathrooms, such as half bathrooms or powder rooms. By taking up as tiny space as possible, they grant for a spacier feel to bathrooms that would otherwise feel cramped with other types of vanities.

Victorian vanities have always been a favourite choice amongst homeowners. They are nearly always prefabricated out of wood, which has intricate carvings and designs, reminiscent of the elaborate and romantic era that was the Victorian age. Victorian vanities look ideal with granite and marble countertops, but you can never go wrong with white or black porcelain.

Unless they are being passed down to you as a family heir loom, original pieces are hard to come by. Antique shops and current owners are probably the first people you should go to. However, you can always find mass produced replicas. These will most likely not have carved designs but rather adhered designs, but many will look like the real thing, stains and all.

Missionary vanities are another timeless style. Like Victorian style vanities, mission vanities are often prefabricated of wood, but demand the intricate carvings. Instead, the carvings are often simple, straight lines. Some don’t even have carvings. This is whey missionary vanities are versatile, healthy to match nearly any bathroom and any theme. You get the classic appeal of wood and the contemporary appeal of minimalistic designs. Missionary vanities look ideal with white or black porcelain, but you can certainly make marble or granite work. Also, think about installing a vessel sink, which is a sink bowl that sits on top the counter rather than dropped in. You’ll find that this makes for a very contemporary, yet classic look.

With vanities, make sure you choose faucet fixtures that match, but with the wide selection of bathroom faucets today, the hard part is narrowing down to one choice.

The great thing about learning some key elements of landscaping is that you can apply them to a home that you are just settling into, as well as one you are about to sell. For those who are selling or buying real estate in Tampa Bay Florida, some extra curb appeal advice will go a long way.

Florida is favourite for nature-lovers. Instead of trying to keep up with garden hobbyists, present a clean, green impression, rather than a mini-arboretum. The decluttered impression that you want for the inside, should apply to the outside. Envision a buyer coming to view your Tampa Bay Florida real estate home and all they can think is either, “how will I keep up with all those tropical flower beds?” or “how long will it take me to undo all of this?” Not that you should tear down all your hard work from a spectacular garden; just be sure to have it freshly pruned, trimmed and weeded for buyers, so they don’t feel like they have to have a green thumb if they want to purchase your home.

Choose your plants according to how much sun and water they need. Then, focus on buying smaller selections (or larger if your budget allows) of some of Florida’s award-winning specimens like the East Indian Holly Fern, which is wonderful for mass ground cover, and the Dwarf Golden Dewdrop for a beautiful border shrub with its yellow-gold leaves. Make up for size with color, with the purple-blooming Princess Flower, or the Yellow Elder, that will grow swiftly (up to eight or ten feet tall). The plants you pick should attract the eyes to the home with their complimentary shades. For example, forest green trim on a home is complimented by shrubs with yellow leaves, and homes with neutral features can always use a few splashes of dramatic color in their landscaping.

Take a picture of the front of your home with you as you visit nurseries and garden shops. Garden professionals can recommend which colors and varieties will work ideal for your particular home. They should also be healthy to tell you what kind of mulch, pebble or lava stones you should use for each. The colors of these can also add a lovely contrast of color.
Plant a few annuals near the mailbox and an odd number of shrubs or hedges in front of the home to create depth. Make your home inviting with colors that compliment, but don’t complicate. If your home is basic in design, plant a few romantic Magnolias or exotic Calathea to break up the lines. Likewise, a home with a modern exterior can be dressed down for the conservative eye with neatly trimmed Serissa Foetida hedges and simple splashes of annuals.

If you want something even more simple, try buying big, decorative pots and filling them with a few shades of hardy flowers. This takes care of catching the eyes of the buyer, yet implies the perfect level of impermanence for the more fickle-natured. You can offer to leave the pots, or take them with you if the buyer doesn’t want them. This can be a swift fix for those who are trying to move, sell and maintain a family and full-time job at the same time. There are plenty of ways to get elaborate with landscaping, but if you need to keep things easy, focus on complimentary colors, hearty specimens and as neat of an exterior as possible, so buyers and visitors will see your home as a breath of fresh, tropical air
