If you are gardening indoors, you know that your plants need water, food and light to flourish. Because sunlight is not acquirable indoors, indoor gardeners have to wage a light source for their plants and they do this with grow lights. If you are using HID lights, or high intensity discharge lights, one of the side effects that you will notice is that the light bulbs will heat up with use. If you have several grow lights in your indoor garden, as would commonly be found in a greenhouse setting, all of those lights are creating a tremendous amount of heat. While some heat is good for plants, an excess of heat can kill them very rapidly, and so greenhouse growers and other indoor gardeners will need some type of grow room ventilation system, so the excess heat is fatigued outside.

A key component in any grow room ventilation setup are the grow room fans. Fantech Fans is a top manufacturer of grow room fans, and they offer several favourite models, including duct fans and inline fans. Fantech fans are prefabricated from galvanized steel and come with ball bearings that are permanently sealed. You can fully control the speed, and they make the connection simple for you because the wiring on their grow room fans is external. The grow room fans come in six-inch, eight-inch, ten- and twelve-inch sizes, and a speed control unit is also available.

In addition to grow room fans, there are other parts that you will need to complete your grow room ventilation setup. While the fans are used to move the air around the greenhouse, you will also need a couple of exhaust fans to enable your grow room ventilation to remove stale air from indoors to outdoors. Duct pipe is also used to move air where you want it to go, and this comes in flexible varieties so that it is simple to work with.

Because you are watering plants in an indoor environment, often on impermeable surfaces, plants can also be exposed to too much moisture in an indoor gardening setting. This is not good, because plants can develop fungal diseases if they are exposed to too much water in the region for an extended period of time. Your grow room ventilation will help to keep good air circulation in the gardening room, so that the water does not have time to sit on the plants’ leaves for long, thereby helping to prevent these types of plant problems.

You can learn more about ventilation systems for grow rooms by visiting an online discount gardening supplier.

A growing trend in landscaping is the addition of substitute gardens, including rock gardens. Using a tiny bit of creativity, rock gardens are a beautiful addition to any landscape and can serve many purposes.

An environmentally-conscious homeowner might select to add a rock garden to help conserve water and lower his/her average water bill. This is because rock gardens are an excellent means by which to conserve water. As with other types of landscaping mulch, rocks, too, retain moisture. Whether water is applied naturally, such as through rainfall, or manually, such as through sprinkling systems, the water retention it supplies helps to reduce the overall amount of water needed. In regions where rainfall might be naturally or circumstantially minimal, such as in a drought-stricken area, the required applications of water will decrease when rock gardens are added.

Rock gardens are a creative way to add natural elements to a landscape to improve aesthetics.

If the landscape lacks color, think about adding some through the choice of rock. Red rock is a great way to add some beauty to a healthy, but perhaps slightly mundane landscape. If the landscape is sufficiently colored and you believe the addition of more color might lessen its already aesthetically amusing qualities, then a neutral-colored rock is a great choice. Browns, tans and blacks add a natural, realistic element to a rock garden that generally complements rather than negates.

Rock gardens also make great use of a naturally organic material to improve trouble areas within a landscape. Some homeowners might select to add rock gardens to bare areas in the landscape while others might select to add rock gardens to areas that tend to retain too much water.

Most realize that either extreme can do great harm to a landscape, and since most work hard to maintain the health of their landscape, treating trouble areas is an important step to maintaining health.

For bare areas, rock gardens might assist both the supplying of water and the subsequent moisture retention the area needs to improve health. By contrast, strategically put rocks of various sizes and textures might assist water runoff that not only prevents a single area from being water-logged, but also grants the water to perhaps disburse (runoff) to other areas that might be lacking. If attempts to correct bare or water-logged areas within your landscape have been successful and you’re considering the addition of a rock garden, you can always contact an Austin tree trimming specialist, who is also knowledgeable in the improvement or maintenance of landscape health through the uses of rock gardens and other methods.

Lastly, and again using strategically put rocks of various sizes and textures, rock gardens might be used as a creative way to change the natural slope of a landscape. For areas beneath the grade of a landscape, perhaps such as the site of a removed tree stump, the addition of a rock garden might serve to fill in and raise the grade to ground level. By contrast, for areas of the landscape a homeowner desires to be above grade level, the addition of a rock garden might serve to present a more alpine appearance.

If you are considering the addition of a rock garden to your landscape, contact an Austin tree care professional for assistance and guidance. His or her experience likely includes many ways to use rock gardens to improve the overall health and appearance of any Austin landscape.

What do you do with a green thumb during those cold winter months indoors? Houseplants are one option, but the heat and dryness of furnace-pumped warm air can bake a poor African violet in no time, and those pesky whiteflies too often spread devastation over softer leaves. Not to mention the long stringy stems reaching for the sparse winter light. No, what you really need is an indoor greenhouse with warm moist growing conditions for your tiny beauties. The answer? Glass bottle terrariums!

This ingenious concept was invented by Victorian age explorers, who would take plant and insect samples from faraway lands and store them in corked glass bottles for the journey back to Britain…. If the equilibrise is right, plants can live indefinitely inside a shut glass environment. Put in just a small amount of water and cork the lid – the roots will take in the liquid, and then respire it out through their leaves.

The moisture then collects on the glass surface of the jar, runs back down into the soil, and the process begins again. terrariums make lovely windowsill gardens, tabletop accents, and friendly bedside companions, and are a great way to bring a garden to a small space if you live in an apartment without a yard. Ideal of all, you never need to remember to water them!

To build a healthy Terrarium:

Select a glass blow or bottle with a sealable lid.
Old canning jars work best, or kitchen bottles with wide necks and corks. You need something with a neck massive enough to fit your hand through, or else you’ll be stuck trying to tend the plants with long tweezers. Select one that is a good size, typically 6 to 12 inches tall, and 4 – 6 inches in diameter.

Gather the materials for your growing conditions.
You will need fine gravel, sand, ground charcoal, and good calibre potting soil, preferably from a garden center, rather than scooped from the outdoor garden.

Put layer of gravel about ½ thick into the bottle first, and then a ½ of sand. These will act as a drainage layer for the water. Then sprinkle a ¼ inch layer of charcoal over the sand. The charcoal filters the air and water within your ecosystem, keeping it clean for the plants to breathe. Finally, fill up the bottle to about ¼ full with the potting soil. If you have a small bottle, you can do with just an inch or so, but if you have more room, use a thicker layer, and your plants will be healthy root more strongly.

Choose suitable plant species.
You’ll want to select slow-growing plants, with a small average growth height, who favor warm moist conditions. A cactus won’t thrive in this type of terrarium, and similarly a geranium would never fit. Fittonia, Calathea, and Helxine (baby tears) are all species which work well inside terrariums; you can find more recommendations here , or just browse your local garden center for small-leaved, humidity-loving varieties.

Plant, water, seal and enjoy!
Carefully plant a small sample of your plant in the soil. Don’t use too massive of a sample, make sure you give it some room to breathe and grow! Water with about a containerful and a drop of liquid plant food, just to get it started, even though you wont want to give it food very often, since you don’t want it to outgrow its home. Cork the bottle, or screw on the lid and set it in your favorite room to keep you company.

Troubleshooting
Terrariums like a tiny ambient natural light, but not too much direct sunlight. Direct sunlight will cause the internal temperature to rise, and form lots of condensation on the glass. This pulls all the water out of the soil and plant and consequently parches it.

Watch your terrarium closely at first, and discover what equilibrise of moisture and air it needs. Depending on the size of the plant it might need more or less water than you’re giving it. If it seems as though there is too much water, leave the lid off for an afternoon, and let it dry out a bit.

Make sure you remove any dead leaves etc as soon as they fall, and trim back the plant if its getting straggly or brown. Plant matter left to decay will start to mold and spoil the environment for the rest of the healthy plants.

Creating your own container garden can be so much fun, especially if you think of using themes. Think about showing off your style with a small kitchen garden, or create an outdoor pot designed to attract hummingbirds or to welcome butterflies. Our beings are drawn to beautiful scents, what about a container giving off wonderful fragrances.

Culinary containers or kitchen gardens are especially handy as a source of herbs, leafy lettuce or parsley, or even edible flowers. You might wish to combine many edibles to create your own miniature garden at the door. Combining edibles with your flowering or ornamental plants can be so captivating – envision Beefsteak Tomatoes surrounded by basil or oregano. For foliage color, use green and purple leaved basils, leaf lettuce and Swiss chard. Parsley is especially great, goes anywhere, and adds captivating texture and rich green color to any container combination. Nasturtiums are grown for their showy, spurred flowers and trailing ones are sensational in your planters – they are edible and give a completed look to the container.

Herbs that work wonderfully well in culinary containers are chives, lemon balm, rosemary, different sages and oregano. Lemongrass is wonderful in soups and adds a nice vertical accent to any planter or outdoor pot.

And then of course there are those peppers, both colorful and hot. Cherry tomatoes should not be forgotten, they look pretty in your arrangements and the spectacular patio tomatoes are there for the picking. Don’t forget arugula and of course golden thyme for another theme.

The ideal place to use your fragrant plants is in garden pots on your deck or patio. This is where we can enjoy their lovely scents when resting in the evening. Mix scented plants with foliage or flowers and see what you can come up with. Some plants, such as heliotrope, can be enjoyed once they start to bloom and for the rest of the summer. Lilies that have been forced in your pots can be moved to the garden after they bloom. Others such as tuberoses might have to be moved indoors before frost and then brought out again next year. Dahlias and of course geraniums make a great show and a delightful addition to your container gardens.

Hummingbirds will arrive right on your deck or patio if you give them the proper encouragement. Along with your hummingbird feeder, some of the ideal container plants to attract them are annual sages. They come in so many colors from bright red to shades of mauve and purpose to creamy white and pink. Try out one or more of them in your garden pots. You might also use Nicotiana plant, petunias and dwarf dahlias too.

To keep all of our container plants going all summer, deadhead regularly and of course water and feed on a timely basis. When plants become scrawny or leggy, just cut them back hard in mid-summer and then they will produce more new flowers and foliage within a few weeks. Your containers will be beautiful right into the cool Fall weather.

In summary, create theme container combinations. They can be ones either for the kitchen, to give off wonderful fragrances and of course to attract hummingbirds and butterflies.

People enjoy Asian gardens for different reasons. For the gardeners, there is a definite design they are creating with the elements of the garden, whether it is a formal or informal type of garden. For visitors, the garden is a place to relax, stroll and quietly reflect on the beautiful landscape that has been created.

Japanese gardens can be designed in different styles. They can be an open, park-like setting, or a secluded moss and bamboo shade garden. The garden can also be a dry or pebble garden with minimal plantings, often referred to as a zen garden.

Most Asian gardens contain certain elements that give it a Asian feel. Usually there is a water feature of some type to bring movement and reflection to the garden. This can be a babbling brook, a calm pond, or just a small fountain near the entrance, symbolically put to grant visitors to wash their hands.

Japanese gardens also make extensive use of rocks. The rocks counterbalance the softness of delicate bamboo or Asian maple leaves, and give the garden some structure. They can also be put to symbolize distant mountains. In a zen garden, they can be put to symbolize a turtle or a crane.

Many Asian gardens also incorporate a small tea home prefabricated of bamboo timbers or dark wood, where tea ceremonies can be performed. There are also gates and railings used to add structure and help lead a visitor through the garden.

One of the elements that most people associate with the Asian garden is a decorative stone lantern. These stone lanterns are prefabricated in different styles for different purposes. Some are meant to be put overlooking water, or as a massive focal point. Some are prefabricated with wide overhangs on top to protect their light from Winter snow.

The garden is meant to be beautiful in all seasons, Winter included. For this reason, the plantings are sculpted and much use is prefabricated of evergreens. Overall, a Asian garden is an evolving work of art that changes through the seasons and the years.

This Series won an Emmy Award for ‘Outstanding Individual Accomplishment – Informational Programming’ for Audrey Hepburn.
In this DVD Audrey Hepburn and mortal Michael York do a marvelous job of narrating the history of the different gardens and providing information about some of the plants and flowers that are grown there.
In fact, they touch upon a lot of other interesting subjects besides the garden they are visiting, like the important people who visited the particular place, and some titbits regarding those visits, and about the changes that the garden has undergone etc;
Hepburn visits altogether 17 gardens in the Dominican Republic, England, France, Holland, Italy, Japan, and the United States..

The video has been beautifully conceived and equally well executed. The two-sided disc contains footages of Audrey Hepburn visiting some of the world’s most beautiful gardens, plus eighty minutes of great music-only the tracks, and two great behind-the-scenes segments showing Hepburn at her charming best, interacting with the technicians , and even digging and giving a hand to an obviously pleased gardener..

I purchased this DVD just to watch Audrey Hepburn. I love watching her films and find her an extremely elegant and dignified personality. She had become superior with apiece passing year, developing an allround personality, never being pretentious ever, not while she was a star , nor now.She was a down to earth, warm and likeable person, and thats what makes this video so special- her sheer presence, the way she dresses so elegantly and the way she carries herself.

When i watched her amidst all those out of this world , Lovely gardens, i felt that the two matched perfectly, apiece complementing the other. She seemed to be the right mortal to have done this series with her keen eye for details and an obvious interest in gardening.

She chats with the gardeners, exchanging tips and providing some informations of her own experiences as a gardener. She is very natural about it with no airs what so ever. One can see the admiration and warmth she generates, as she interacts with various people crossways the world, as she visits these gardens.

A great deal of historical information on gardening is provided on this video, and we get to see different types of gardens videlicet the Asian Zen gardens, which is totally marvellous with its water body and rockery, Some lovely traditional Flower gardens like the English Rose Garden , and Formal or planned gardens like the Tulip Gardens in Holland.

The Formal Rose Gardens that she visits are breathtakingly beautiful.Hepburn keeps quoting a few lines of her favorite poems on several occassions making the proceedings even more interesting.
The Dutch Gardens shown were truly magnificent , the visuals incredible to state the least- totally marvelous photography.

Actor Michael York has done an excellent job with his narration. He is an integral part of this video complementing Hepburn’s visits and adding narrations ,tips and comments of his own
Even if you are not a fan of Audrey Hepburn , video is worth watching , as this a well prefabricated DVD and it is a chance to see all those wonderful gardens at one go.
Audrey Hepburn quoting gardener Anne Leighton “A garden, to be a garden, must represent a different world, however small, from the real world….Gardening offers man a chance to regulate at least one aspect of his life–to control his environment and show himself as he wishes to be.”
